JPMorgan Chase Mandates Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Corporate HQ Entry
The banking leader has told staff members moving into its new headquarters in New York that they must submit their biometric data to enter the multibillion-dollar structure.
Change from Optional to Required
The investment bank had originally planned for the registration of biometric data at its new high-rise to be optional.
However, employees of the biggest American bank who have started operations at the corporate hub since August have obtained electronic messages stating that physical scan entry was now "required".
Understanding the Biometric System
The new entry system requires personnel to provide their hand geometry to pass through access portals in the main floor in place of swiping their access passes.
Headquarters Details
The corporate tower, which apparently cost $3 billion to develop, will in time serve as a home for thousands of employees once it is completely filled in the coming months.
Safety Justification
JP Morgan did not provide a statement but it is understood that the implementation of biological markers for entry is designed to make the facility better protected.
Exemption Provisions
There are special provisions for specific personnel who will retain the ability to use a traditional pass for entry, although the standards for who will employ more conventional entry methods remains unspecified.
Supporting Mobile Applications
Complementing the implementation of physical identifier systems, the company has also introduced the "Corporate Access" mobile app, which acts as a electronic pass and center for worker amenities.
The application allows users to coordinate external entry, use indoor maps of the building and arrange in advance dining from the premises' multiple restaurant options.
Broader Safety Concerns
The deployment of tighter entry controls comes as US corporations, especially those with major presence in the city, look to strengthen protection following the attack of the chief executive of one of the biggest American insurance companies in July.
The executive, the head of UnitedHealthcare, was the victim of the attack not far from the bank's location.
Additional Office Considerations
It is not known if JP Morgan intends to introduce biometric access for staff at its offices in other key banking hubs, such as the British financial district.
Corporate Surveillance Context
The action comes amid discussion over the employment of technology to monitor employees by their employers, including tracking physical presence metrics.
In recent months, all the bank's employees on hybrid work schedules were instructed they must return to the physical location full-time.
Management Commentary
The bank's chief executive, the financial executive, has described the bank's recently opened 60-storey headquarters as a "beautiful physical manifestation" of the company.
The executive, one of the influential banking figures, recently alerted that the chance of the financial markets crashing was significantly higher than many investors anticipated.
